18-Year-Old Narrowly Misses Becoming Latest Victim of Takata Airbags

A minor crash recently became nearly fatal because of a Takata airbag in a young woman’s Honda Accord. Karina Dorado, an 18-year-old from Nevada, had her trachea punctured by shrapnel from the airbag inflator and had to be rushed to surgery for it to be removed from her now-damaged vocal cords.

Dorado, however, is one of the lucky ones. Takata is one of the most widely-used auto suppliers in Japan; their airbags have been installed in over 85 million vehicles. However, Takata airbags are to blame for at least 16 deaths and over 180 injuries nationwide.

The largest recall in the history of America has been issued for Takata airbags, and Takata is being held legally responsible for not responding to early signs of faulty airbags.

“Tragically, most Americans won’t realize they have a defective Takata airbags until it’s potentially fatal,” stated Alexander Shunnarah, CEO of Alexander Shunnarah Personal Injury Attorneys, P.C. “In order to avoid future injuries and deaths, citizens must check their vehicles.”

Alexander Shunnarah’s Travel Safety Tips

With Summer officially here, travel is on the rise — whether it’s traveling for a family gathering or a much-needed vacation.

However, it’s important to remember that travel this summer will look different than it has in previous summers. We are still in the middle of a pandemic.

At Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys we want to make sure you have a safe and fun Summer.

Read our tips below on how to be prepared and travel safely.

Plan ahead:

  • Decide the route you’ll be taking. Plan for stops at clean and safe rest areas.
  • Pick up food at drive-throughs, curbside restaurant service, or stores.
  • Decide who will be driving. If you are traveling a long distance, it’s a good idea to rotate drivers. This will keep everyone rested and limit drowsiness behind the wheel.

Pack Smart:

  • Bring enough of your medicine to last you for the entire trip.
  • Pack enough alcohol-based hand sanitizer and keep it within easy to reach.
  • Bring a face covering to wear in public places.
  • Prepare food and water for your trip. Pack non-perishable food in case restaurants and stores are closed.

Pack Safe:

It’s easy to pile all the luggage into the trunk when getting ready to travel. Some questions you should ask yourself before you hit the road is, “Can the driver see through the back?” or “Is there any luggage that could cause damage to someone in the car if we were to get in an accident?”

Lodging:

Take steps to protect yourself from COVID-19 when booking accommodations or planning an overnight stay. If you are considering cleaning your travel lodgings, see CDC’s guidance on how to clean and disinfect.

Protect Yourself, Your Family & Your Community:

Remember, we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. We can’t let up on safety measures yet if we want to get back to normal.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place. If you don’t have soap and water, use hand sanitizer. Avoid close contact with others. Wear a mask or face-covering in public places.

From all of us at Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys, stay safe and have a wonderful Summer!

COMMON TYPES OF PROPERTY DAMAGE

Everything from clothing to appliances to irreplaceable memories all can be lost to fire damage. Having a valid insurance claim denied after the fact only deepens the wound left behind.

Living in an area prone to severe weather and/or have a low slope or flat roof with asphalt shingles, you are considered high-risk for hail damage. Luckily, the majority of homeowners policies cover hail damage, mitigating the expensive nature of such repairs.

While hail can occur practically anywhere if natural conditions permit, insurers often may try to argue the damage suffered from a hail storm does not fit the conditions necessary for a claim.

Tornados can leave complete devastation in their wake. A tornado is classified as a wind event in your homeowners insurance policy. Most homeowners insurance policies cover damage to your property and personal items from a tornado. We recommend you read through your policy to determine if there is a separate wind deductible that could include tornado damage. This separate deductible requires policyholders to pay a sum out of pocket before their insurance pays for the claim.

High-velocity winds can cause severe damage to your property. Common windstorm claims involve roofs blowing off, trees falling on your property, fences blown down, and leaky windows. This type of damage can also bring hidden damages that aren’t realized upon the initial assessment of your property. Damage caused by wind is covered in most homeowners insurance policies, however there can be ambiguous exclusions or limitations which may cause your claim to be denied.
