Elmiron

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is a medication used to treat a disorder called “interstitial cystitis,” pain and pressure in the bladder with no clear cause or infection.  Interstitial cystitis is also known as “painful bladder syndrome”, and Elmiron is the only medication approved by the Food and Drug Aministration (FDA) to treat it. It has also been used to treat urinary tract infections  as well osteoarthritis in both humans and animals.  It is manufactured by Jannsen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson.

Elmiron associated with Pigmentary Maculopathy

Pigmentary maculopathy is a rare eye condition recently (2018) reported as occuring after long-term Elmiron treatment. The condition affects the center part of the retina (macula) most dealing with the sensitive parts of vision.  Damage to the area can cause severe eye disorder or even blindness.

While there are several variants of maculopathy, “pigmentary maculopathy of unkown etiology” is the term used to describe the condition associated with Elmiron. Causing structural changes to the pigmented layer of the retina, one study in May 2019 noted that Elmiron lead to “potentially avoidable retinal degenration phenomenon associated with chronic [Elmiron] exposure,” adding they were unsure if the disorder would improve when a patient stops taking Elmiron.
